This site is a review of various places to walk in the Washington, Illinois area. I like to walk for about 30 minutes at least four times a week. Sometimes I like to get away from walking in my neighborhood and have found a few paved trails and some park trails that offer some variety. If a trail is not circular or would obviously take longer than 30 minutes to complete, I’ll set my cell phone alarm to sound in 15 minutes so I can turn around and go back to my car, giving me my 30 minute total. Each post will have a new location and some comments.

WASHINGTON RECREATION TRAIL PT 4

Part 4 of the trail begins where part 3 ends on Wilmore Rd in the Five Points Washington Parking lot near the Washington Fire Station. This part of the trail is referred to in Part 1 of the recreational trail series where you would go straight instead of turning left behind Five Points Washington. This walk timed out at just under 30 minutes and begins by crossing Wilmore and turning left with the High School football field parking lot to your right and Five Points to your left. Continue past the baseball field on your right and follow the trail as it turns right behind the outfield of the baseball field and away from the sound of the Wilmore Rd traffic after about 3 minutes of walking. As it is in most parts the trail is paved and marked with white stripes in the center to create lanes for cyclists. After about 3 more minutes with the backyards of residences on your left and the athletic fields of the high school on your right you pass an opening on your left where Kingsbury Rd comes to a dead end. Shortly after this opening the trail takes you left over a small bridge into Washington Park. After about 1 minute continue past a sidewalk that breaks off to the right (and leads to Jackson St). A couple of minutes later the trail comes to a fork where you can turn right and cross through a tree line and over a drainage stream that runs down the middle of the park, or continue straight. As I mentioned in Part 1 of the recreational trail series, there is no complete loop to this trail. There is much more trail to the right of this fork than there is if you continue straight, but for the sake of the 30 minute time frame this part of the series continues straight for about 3 minutes where the trail abruptly ends at Westgate Rd. This gives you about 14 minutes of walking before you turn around and head back for a total of about 28 minutes. There isn’t much shade and while you won’t be visible from all angles, you will be in public places and this portion does attract a fair amount of people. I parked in the southern part of the Five Points Washington parking lot closest to the Washington Fire Dept.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE SQUARE: East on Peoria Street. Right on Wilmore Rd. First left into Five Points Washington parking lot.

DRIVE TIME: Less than 5 minutes
