This site is a review of various places to walk in the Washington, Illinois area. I like to walk for about 30 minutes at least four times a week. Sometimes I like to get away from walking in my neighborhood and have found a few paved trails and some park trails that offer some variety. If a trail is not circular or would obviously take longer than 30 minutes to complete, I’ll set my cell phone alarm to sound in 15 minutes so I can turn around and go back to my car, giving me my 30 minute total. Each post will have a new location and some comments.

WASHINGTON RECREATION TRAIL PT 5

Part 5 of the trail starts where Jackson St comes to a dead end. This is the end of the sidewalk that was mentioned in Part 4 of the recreational trail series that breaks off to the right about 1 minute after entering Washington Park. I chose this spot for parking purposes as it gave me the closest access to pick up the portion of the trail to the right of the fork that was also mentioned in Part 4 of the recreational trail series. Consequently, Part 5 will retrace a small portion of Part 4. This section timed out just less than 30 minutes as I turned part of the walk into a loop rather than turn around at the 15 minute mark. The trail begins by crossing a small bridge into the park on a sidewalk that leads to the main trail. After about 2 minutes you turn right onto the portion that was covered in Part 4 where the trail is paved and marked with white stripes in the center to create lanes for cyclists. After another 2 minutes the trail comes to a fork where you turn right and cross through a tree line and over a drainage stream. Follow the trail as it takes you to the outer edge of the park with residential yards to your right and Lincoln Grade School directly in your sight. After about 4 minutes cross Lincoln St. at the crosswalk and continue past a tennis court and the parking lot for the many baseball fields on your left and the grade school playground on  your right. After about 3 more minutes the trail comes to a “T”. This part of the recreational trail series will cover the right portion of the trail. Part 6 will cover the left portion. As you turn right there will be a tree line to your left and a baseball field to your right. After about a minute the trail curves towards Jackson St with the school just ahead and to the right. 2 minutes later turn left onto Wood St which puts you on a neighborhood street sidewalk. A minute later turn left at Monroe St and shortly after turn right where the paved and marked portion of the trail picks up again. Continue straight for about 3 minutes through the shade of overhanging trees from both sides until you reach Jefferson St where the trail abruptly ends. Turn back and retrace your steps until you come to Jackson St just in front of the school. Turn left and follow Jackson St back to the start for a total of about 27 minutes. There this isn’t much shade for most of this portion and you will be visible. I parked on the street near the dead end.
